Personal insurance advice in Brisbane
If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family be okay financially?
Protect what matters most
The insurance included in your super fund might seem sufficient, but would it actually cover your mortgage, replace lost income or provide for your family if something happened to you? It's a question worth answering before you ever need to make a claim.
Working with families and individuals across Brisbane's western suburbs, we look at the cover you already hold, find the gaps and assess suitable options, including life insurance, income protection, total and permanent disability (TPD) and trauma cover.
As your circumstances change, your insurance needs can change too. Buying a home, starting a family or changing jobs are all good reasons to review your cover and make sure it still meets your needs.
Types of cover we can help with
Each one does a different job. We'll help you work out which ones you actually need.
Life insurance
Pays a lump sum to your beneficiaries or estate if you pass away (and under many policies, if you're diagnosed with a terminal illness), so your family can clear debts and keep up with living costs.
Total and permanent disability (TPD)
Pays a lump sum if illness or injury leaves you unable to work again, as defined by your policy, to help with debts, care, rehabilitation and changes to your home.
Trauma cover
Pays a lump sum if you're diagnosed with a specified serious illness, such as cancer, heart attack or stroke, even if you later return to work. Also called critical illness cover.
Income protection
Replaces part of your income for a set period if illness or injury stops you working. Waiting periods, benefit periods and the amount paid depend on your policy.
Is the insurance in your super enough?
For many Australians, super is where their life, TPD and income protection cover sits, often set up by default when they joined the fund. It's a good starting point, but it wasn't designed around you.
Default cover is usually based on your age, not your income, mortgage or family. Policies can carry exclusions and conditions that affect when you can claim. And because premiums come out of your super balance, they quietly reduce what you'll have at retirement.
Holding cover inside super can ease pressure on your cash flow, while cover held outside super can offer broader policy features. We review what you hold, explain the trade-offs and only recommend changes where they genuinely improve your position.
How much cover do you need?
There's no single right number. A couple with young children and a large mortgage needs very different protection from someone close to retirement with the house paid off. We work it out from:
- Your mortgage and other debts
- Everyday household costs and the people who depend on you
- How much income would need replacing, and for how long
- Savings, investments and cover you already hold
- Possible medical, rehabilitation or care costs
The aim isn't the most cover. It's the right amount, at a premium you can comfortably keep paying.
Personal insurance FAQs
Is income protection insurance worth it?
If you rely on your income to pay the mortgage and bills, it's worth serious consideration. Your ability to earn is usually your biggest financial asset. Whether it suits you depends on your savings, sick leave, other cover and the premium compared with the risk of being unable to work. We help you weigh that up.
How much does personal insurance advice cost?
It depends on the advice you need. How we're paid is set out in our Financial Services Guide, and the fees for your advice are set out in your Statement of Advice.
Are personal insurance premiums tax-deductible?
Income protection premiums for policies held outside super are generally tax-deductible. Life, TPD and trauma premiums held in your own name generally aren't. Cover held inside super is treated differently again. Your accountant can confirm how this applies to you.
Can I change my insurance if I have a pre-existing medical condition?
Possibly, although a new insurer may apply exclusions, charge a higher premium or decline the application. Don't cancel existing cover until you know replacement cover is in place and on what terms. We check this before recommending any change.
Can you help if I need to make a claim?
Yes. A claim usually comes at a difficult time. We can help you understand what your policy covers, work through the paperwork and liaise with the insurer, so you're not dealing with it alone.
Do I need all four types of cover?
Not necessarily. Each one covers a different risk, and some may overlap with cover you already hold through super or your employer. We only recommend cover that fills a genuine gap in your situation.
